The tiny-house movement and sustainable house day are getting us all excited. With so many people ready to share their tips its a great time to explore the possibilities for your place. Sustainable House Day just opened hundreds of doors across Australia last weekend. I saw a gorgeous home belonging to Bec Talbot & Graeme Williams of Mullumbimby, NSW. They demonstrate how living simply with an interactive garden for children can bring much freedom and happiness. Bec made a children's cubby simply by making an arch out of chicken wire and planting a few passionfruit vines. Fruit & a cubby - such playtime bliss! She also doesn't believe in SELF -sufficiency, rather believes in COMMUNITY -sufficiency where fellow neighbours exchange surplus. |
Sydney-based sustainability guru Michael Mobbs was a guest speaker at some of the homes - you can check out his top tips for living off grid in an urban setting via his website: www.sustainablehouse.com.au.
Come along to the Sustainable House Expo this Saturday 19 Sep, 12-4pm at Lismore City Hall. Its a Self Seed coordinated event and we are proud to present it with Lismore City Council, Byron Shire, Tweed Shire Council and other local partners. Featuring over 35 winning sustainable house designs and a plethora of experts in solar, composting toilets, ethical banking, recycled furniture, eco wall coverings and community energy - the Expo is a fabulous family friendly free event.
Meet the designers and hear some fabulous talks. Sustainable design experts Project Habitation will be speaking at 1pm followed by Beyond Zero Emissions who will cover how you can completely wipe your electricity and gas bills. They will be launching the new Energy Freedom Book. Great news is that local solar business Light Touch Solar & Electrical are giving away a Solar System at the Sustainable House Expo. Such good news for those of you wanting to green up your home. Sustainable House Expo Saturday 19 September 12-4pm Lismore City Hall |
Community-owned renewable energy is the latest wave creating a movement in Australia. It's all about localised energy sources that are owned by communities, providing healthy local economies and investment opportunities. Enova Energy is Australia's first community-owned renewable energy retailer and right now they have a share offer open for people to become joint owners of the company. The share offer closes 25 September, so if you are interested, check out the Prospectus here: www.enovaenergy.com.au.
Then we have the rise of community groups like Community Owned Renewable Energy Mullumbimby (COREM). They are forming some groundbreaking projects that will enable every day people - including renters - the chance to invest in local solar projects that will see more renewable energy in local towns. The COREM launch will be a high-powered buzz, so come along on the 18 October in Mullum of course, more info here: www.corem.org.au.
Buzzing and electrifying communities across Australia. Such a great time to plug in.
